Cologne

Golden Pig Hotel, Rose Monday

February, 1634

Sybilla Bayr, once known to her customers as “Little Cornflower,” eased slowly out from under the bulk of Severin Binius. He grumbled and snorted in his sleep, then rolled away from her.

Sybilla sighed. Severin was a very good tipper, and his influence and patronage had been critical to her success, but his fetishes were. . . bizarre, at times. Sybilla carefully moved to the door. Binius would still be asleep after she came back from church. But if he wasn’t and became angry at her absence, she could always claim that she was simply doing his bidding, checking up on the “New Catholic” parishioners being allowed to worship at Saint Kunibert. If she was lucky, Sister Ursula, the Greve’s source of information within the Beguinage de Merici, would be at the service with a written report for her to pass on to Binius.

After washing herself in a basin, Sybilla selected a plain but stylish dress. Most of the sumptuary laws in Cologne had been repealed, but it still wasn’t wise for a match-maker and procuress of prostitutes to bring attention to herself in church. Now the festival at the Gürzenich tonight. . . that would be different.

Despite the need to hurry, she couldn’t help herself. Once more she opened the door to her closet and took out the silk dress that Binius had purchased for her. What was the color again? Ah, mauve. She could forgive all the evil changes Grantville had brought upon the world just for the sake of wearing such a delicious shade of purple. And the dye was colorfast, too, especially with silk.

Sybilla sighed and placed the dress back into the closet. Tonight—tonight she would not be a simple match-maker, a woman to be sneered at behind her back by the women of the higher orders of Cologne’s society. No, tonight she would truly be what she had always wanted to be in her heart. . . the Margravina.
